Boys will be boys...

So, last night my brother was playing baseball in Canton. He was in the batters box and a line drive hit him in the temple. He sat down for a minute and his coach asked if he was ok. He said he was fine and could play. This was in one of the early innings. They usually play 7 innings, but they were tied after 7, so they ended up playing 9 innings. Cory finished the game out though and played, saying the whole time he was fine. In the car on the way home, he tells my dad, "I think I might need to get looked at. I'm having muffled hearing and I have a bad headache." He also admitted that he was hurting bad the whole time after this happened, but in his words, "wasn't going to let them put a stupid freshman in for him." My dad calls my mom, and they decided to bring him to the ER. Cory's doctor met them up there. They found out he had a minor hairline fracture on his skull and was bleeding a little on his brain. They did a catscan and said they didn't think it was major, but wanted to admit him and watch him for the night because there was a lot of liquid in his ears. So my brother was in the hospital all night. He should get released sometime this morning. He had another catscan this morning, and I don't know the results yet.

Lesson to learn here: Don't be stupid. Head injuries are serious.

International Day

Shani came over to the office today before the staff meeting so we decided to go over to the International Day extravaganza in the Apache Rooms. When we got there, Carlos was salsa dancing with someone. That was fun to watch. I love watching people dance, mainly because I'm so horrible at it. Shani and I walked around and looked at the exhibits and he read some Arabic writing to me. I was impressed, even if he grew up learning the language. We kept walking around then saw Carlos. He was finished dancing and asked me why I didn't get up there and dance with him. I confessed that I had no idea how to salsa dance, so he decided he needed to teach me the basic step. We were in the middle of a big room, but no one was really looking at us, so it wasn't a big deal. I guess if I had more practice then I would do alright. I would love to learn how to salsa dance someday. I also saw Edward, a guy from church over there. He was just visiting a friend up there. International Day was a success if you ask me. I got to learn a salsa dance step and Carlos even let me have his CD of Latin dance music. I better get busy practicing...

Day 5-Change of plans
Because of a mix up with daycare plans for Ethan, it was decided I would ski Thursday instead of Wednesday. I was actually glad, because there was going to be a concert on Thursday for St. Patrick's day. Everyone got up and had breakfast then prepared to leave. Ethan was in a good mood, so I knew it would be a good day. Once everyone left, I asked Ethan if he wanted to play outside in the snow, but he wanted to stamp, so we did that instead while watching Air Bud - Seventh Inning Fetch. We built a fort with the pillows on the couch after that. We had lunch after playing that morning, then Ethan went down for a nap. When he got up he still didn't want to play outside. He wanted to watch Little Big League, so we did. Pam got home with Logan and Dylan around 3, so Ethan and I got bundled up and went out to play with the boys. The fort was still under construction and I helped by breaking sticks for them. Oh yes-I'm so strong. We came in around 5:30 to get cleaned up for dinner. We went to the Stonebridge Inn's restaurant, Artisan. I had the ruby red trout and it was wonderful...best dang trout I've ever had in fact. Logan and Dylan ended up trading food, because Logan didn't like the pasta. Dylan had a grilled cheese sandwich, and it was the fanciest grilled cheese sandwich I've ever seen. After dinner we went to the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for some ice cream. We saw some other people from Tyler in the village, so that was fun. We all loaded up in the car after taking a few pictures. Caden fell asleep in the car. He had a long day skiing, so we weren't surprised. Ethan and Caden both went to bed when we got home. Logan, Dylan, and I played Sorry, but Dylan wanted to play with his $1 basketball goal, so Pam played with him while Logan and I played Sorry again. Dylan ended up wanting to play Sorry again, but since we were in the middle of a game, he couldn't play. He got mad, so Pam said she'd play tic-tac-toe with him. He said that was stupid, but played anyway. Kids are so funny. We eventually all headed to bed, but not before Logan could push Dylan on the stairs and make him cry. I went to my room and called my mom to see how she was after being in the hospital while on vacation in Florida. She seemed ok, but not great. I just prayed a lot then eventually fell asleep.

Day 6-St. Patty's Day & Skiing
I got up excited and a little scared to go skiing. Since I hadn't skied in 3 or 4 years, I thought I might have forgotten how to ski. That morning I went to the ski rental place to get my skis while Thomas, Logan, and Dylan went to get their stuff out of storage. My feet were already pretty cold since I had forgotten my sock liners. I decided to break down and buy a $20 pair of socks at the rental place. Let me just tell you something-that was the best $20 I've spent in a long time. Those socks were magical. My feet didn't get cold at all that day. (except later that evening when I stepped in the creek to get Ethan) Once I had my new socks on and got my rentals, I headed to the base of the mountain to meet the guys. We decided we'd ski the bunny hill once so I could get my 'ski legs' back. That feeling...that rush you get when you're going down the mountain...it was incredible. I couldn't believe how easily I remembered the technique. Thomas asked if I wanted to do the bunny hill again before heading to some blue slopes, but I was pumped up and ready to head to something else, so we headed to a lift that would bring us to some new trails.

**Side note: If you've never been skiing, you may not know how slopes are classified. They are broken up into groups of colors: green, blue, and black. If it is an easy slope, it is a green. These are the easiest slopes on the mountain. Blue is an intermediate slope. These are steeper and usually the most fun slopes. They aren't too easy, but you also won't fall on your butt every few minutes if you know what you're doing. Blacks are the hardest slopes. They are usually very steep and often have moguls (bumps).

We rode up several lifts to a side of the mountain that some locals had told us had great blue trails. They were right. They were all really great slopes. We were up at the top of the mountain so it got pretty cold and it was snowing. (of course my feet were still perfect thanks to my new blue socks) We stopped after a couple trails at a little warming hut to get the boys some hand warmers. We skied until 1:00 then went down to the base to get some lunch at Sno'Beach Cafe. After lunch Logan met up with a friend of his and skied with him. Thomas, Dylan and I went to ski some more blues and also watched a little of a jump contest that was going on for St. Patrick's Day. Dylan asked his dad if we could go to the half pipe, but Thomas wasn't too sure where it was located. We ended up skiing a black that had a ton of jumps on it, but we didn't go on any of the jumps-I'm not that brave. Dylan was mad since we didn't go to the half pipe so he said he wanted to go home. Thomas called Pam and she came to get him around 3:00. It was actually perfect timing because at 3:00 we went to get Caden out of ski school. He was so excited to ski with his dad. He's probably one of the coolest 4 year olds I know. We went on the bunny slope, then went over to Buffalo Bumps, Caden's favorite place. It was just a short little place that had bumps you could ski over. Since we stayed close to Fanny Hill (the bunny slope) with Caden, we could also hear the concert going on by The Prodigals. They were an irish-jig punk band. Yes, those really exist. If you want to read what they have to say about playing on a ski slope, read their 'road story' from March 22. Thomas, Caden and I skied until the lifts closed, then met back up with Logan. They put their stuff back in storage, and then I returned my skis. At the base of the mountain they were passing out beads and selling green beer for St. Patrick's Day. We watched some irish jig dancers, and then Thomas got some popcorn for us to all share on the way back to the condo. While we were waiting for the bus Caden kept asking me to put popcorn in his mouth because he couldn't get a hold of it with his gloves on. A guy on the bus thought it was pretty funny. When we got back to the condo the boys and I went to play in the snow for awhile. Caden kept eating snow.

Here are some more pictures I took that day. Sorry, but I didn't take my camera on the slopes.

Beautiful background:

We came back inside after playing for awhile. Thomas and Pam were going out to eat that night so it was just me and the boys. Pam said they could eat whatever they wanted that night. They wanted scrambled eggs, crescent rolls, and chips. I guess that's what you get when you ask and 8, 6, 4, and 2 year old what they want to eat. They watched TV and we played Sorry. I put the boys to bed around 9, then watched a little TV before going to bed. It was a really good day even though I was a little sore from skiing. Now I can say I've skied at Aspen, or at least at one of the four mountains there.

Day 7
Logan decided he didn't want to ski the last day, so he stayed with Ethan and me. We decided to go the mountain with everyone that morning so I could get some souvenirs for my family. Logan wasn't too excited about shopping, but I didn't make him suffer too long. Ethan was being a typical 2 year old in the stores, hiding under clothes racks and stuff like that. He was really excited to see a dog in one store, so we stopped and he pet the dog. We got back on the bus and headed to the condo to warm up. Logan and I played Sorry for the millionth time that week while Ethan watched 'See Spot Run'...again. We had lunch, and then the boys played with their beads they had gotten the day before on the mountain. Ethan went down for a nap soon after that and ended up sleeping for over 2 hours. Logan was extremely bored staying in the house, but didn't want to go play outside by himself. He didn't understand why I wouldn't leave Ethan sleeping alone in the house, but he got over it. We played Sorry again and he created some new cards to make the game more exciting. After Ethan woke up, he went outside to play for awhile. We came back in to warm up after an hour or so and then the rest of the family got back from skiing. Dylan and Caden wanted to go back outside and Ethan wants to do whatever he brothers do, so we all went outside. Logan stayed inside because he said he was tired of playing in the snow. We had a snowball fight for a little while. It was funny because everytime I'd throw snow at Caden he'd say, "I'm warning you." I guess he hears that a lot! Dylan and Caden had on their waterproof boots so they were walking in the shallow creek. Ethan decided to do the same, but his shoes and socks got soaked. I had to jump in after him so my socks got soaked as well. I told them it was time to go in after that because Caden had walked in some deeper water and had cold feet too. We got inside and took off our wet clothes and warmed up. We had dinner, and then Thomas and Pam went to get pictures that had been taken on the mountain. We watched the Scooby Doo movie then got ready for bed. After the boys got in bed, I went and packed my stuff so we'd be ready to leave in the morning.

Day 8 & 9-Driving home
We got up the next day and drove to Amarillo. The weather was perfect this time, so that didn't slow us down. I could barely walk when I got up that morning because my calves were so sore, but they felt better after I walked around for awhile. I finished my book, "All the President's Pets". The boys were pretty restless in the car so we stopped at Burger King for lunch so they could play on the playground. When we got to Amarillo, we had dinner at Taco Bueno and Ethan flirted with some girls. We went swimming at the hotel, and then went to bed.
The next day we headed to Tyler. We woke up and got dressed, and then I took Logan, Dylan, and Caden to the lobby of the hotel for breakfast. Logan decided to make waffles for everyone with the waffle iron in the shape of Texas. Pam and Ethan joined us when we were finishing up our breakfast. Pam turned the TV in the lobby to Dante's Peak and soon we had to answer a lot of questions about volcanoes. We eventually got on the road around 9:30. I was bored since I didn't have my book to read, so I played a lot of solitaire on my iPod. We got home around 5:45 Sunday night. The boys all played with Annabelle because they love dogs. As soon as they left my house, I got in the car with Michelle and went to bible study. We picked up Aubrey on the way. I should have stayed home and caught up on sleep, but I just wanted to be around people my own age. After bible study, Chelle, Aubrey, and I went to eat at Friday's, and then I finally went home and got some sleep.

So there you go...I finally finished this post after having it saved as a draft for almost a month. If you want to see all my picture from the trip, go here:

Tax day

Today is tax day. I'm sure the post office is full of people dropping in their returns...or their extension forms. I got my W-2 from TJC back in the middle of January, so I did my taxes in on 1/27/05. I felt very good about myself that day, glad that I had accomplished this so early since I'm a natural procrastinator. Little did I know that about a month later, I would receive a W-2 from my mom's office. I didn't even remember working there, but apparently I had. Forget the fact that by law she should have given it to me by 1/31. Who is really going to turn their mom in for that? I was a little frustrated to say the least. My dad told me not to freak out and that he would get me the amendment form so I could add this other W-2 to my taxes. Well, it took my dad about a month to get it to me, so around the middle of March is when I got the form. I set it aside because I was in no rush to do this. I mean, I had already gotten my tax refund. My W-2 for my mom's office was for only $99.00-that's it! It seemed so silly for me to even bother with it, but I wanted to do the right thing and claim all my income.
So, time passed by and before I knew it, it was April 11th and I still hadn't worked on the form. I brought it to work with me everyday this week. I didn't get around to trying to fill it out until Wednesday, the 13th. I was doing pretty well until I got to the place where I had to find a number from the tax schedule to put in that blank. I tried to find this number online, and I thought I had finally found it, so I put the number in the blank. By the time I had finished this form, I owed the government thousands of dollars. Obviously I had done something wrong here. So you want to know what I decided to do?
**(If you work for the IRS or the government, please don't read the rest of this entry.)

Yep, that's right-I didn't do it. I mean who really cares about claiming an extra $99? I sure don't! So now I'm a bad citizen. Please don't report me. I just don't see the point in having to claim that money. I paid the taxes on it and if anything, the IRS will owe me money. They can have it...I just don't want to deal with the paperwork.

Mixed emotions...

Well, most of you know by now that I'm moving to Japan in July. I had left one very important friend off my list when I told people about this. I didn't really intend to not tell Micheal, I just hadn't called him yet. I figured that was a conversation I'd rather have with him in person. I finally got the chance to tell him a few weeks ago. He was on his way into Tyler, but wasn't going to have much free time, so I wouldn't get to see him face to face. I figured I needed to just tell him since it was only a few months away before I would be leaving. If you're wondering why it was hard for me to tell Micheal, it's because for 2 years we've talked about moving somewhere (a big city) together after he graduated. Well, he graduates in December. We were making small talk that day on the phone and I said, "Hey, I need to tell you something." I told him that I'd be moving to Japan in July for at least a year, maybe up to 3, depending on how much I liked it there. He yelled, "What?! No you aren't!" I went on to tell him about how I knew this was what I was supposed to do, and I told him I wanted him to come visit me there too if he could. I didn't get Micheal to see my side that day. He was upset when we got off the phone, but was supposed to call me later that day. It's been almost 2 weeks and I haven't talked to him yet, so I'm going to have to make an emergency trip to San Marcos. I was actually going to San Antonio already the last week in April, so it isn't too much out of the way. I know he'll get over the fact that I'm leaving, but I want him to be happy for me. I want him to realize this is really something I want to do.

On a side note: Thanks to you guys who have been extremely supportive of this new part of my life. I'm really excited about going to Japan and I can't wait to tell you guys about it once I'm there.

Edit: I wrote this entry on Monday, the 11th. I'm adding this to it now and posting it today. I talked to Micheal last night. He's still mad about the situation, but he's glad that I'll get to see him in a few weeks. I think he's really just waiting for me to tell him I'm not going. I guess it won't be real to him until I'm actually gone.

Babies everywhere...

Well, 2 of my old roommates have had babies in March. I'm so excited for them. I can't wait to see the babies. Hopefully we'll all get together in July.
Rachael & Ryan had twin girls, Cate and Clare. They are adorable. I can't help it. I must show you pictures. I'm like a proud aunt, except I'm not related to them! Cate and Clare were born on March 25, 2005.

Here is Cate & Clare sleeping: (and please don't ask which one is Cate and which one is Clare...I have no idea!)

On March 19, 2005, Traci had Kate Ansley. You can see pictures of her with the link below.

Kate Ansley was welcomed by her parents, Traci & Bryan, and her brother, Brayden. Brayden's one of the coolest kids I've ever met, even though I've only met him once. I'm sure he'll be a great big brother.

April fools joke a few days too early...

This story is a little late coming, but I wanted to wait until I could put the picture up with this.

On Tuesday, March 29th, I got home around 11 p.m. My dad was watching TV in the sunroom and says to me, "Hey, can you go check on your brother?" I was confused and asked why. He said, "Well, him and I got in a fight and he was pretty mad. Just go see if he's calmed down." I said, "Are you serious?" Dad just said, "Yes". So I go upstairs, knock on Cory's door, and he says, "Come in". I open his door and he's laying on the bed with an ice pack over his right eye. I said, "What happened?" Without saying a word, he just took the ice pack off his eye and this is what I saw:

I was mad. I said, "Dad really did this to you?" I mean, my dad is not a violent person at all, and I just couldn't believe it. Cory said, "Well, I don't remember what I said, but I made him mad and then I hit him on the arm. I thought he was just kidding too, but then he punched me in the face." I was very confused, but I believed him because I know Cory does have the ability to make my dad upset at times, but my dad has never reacted with violence. Just about this time, my dad walks in the room. I yelled, "You did this to him? Really? I'm calling the cops or something...this is crazy." My dad and my brother both just started laughing. I said, "Man! You guys got me good." So no, my dad didn't punch my brother, much to my relief.

So you want to know what really happened? Cory was at baseball practice that day and he was bunting the ball. The ball went off the bat and hit his eye, resulting in the nasty eye seen above.

My mailroom boys...

Here is a typical conversation that involves Tyler:

Setting: I called the student mailroom to ask Matt a question. Tyler answered the phone.

Me: Hey Tyler, is Matt there?
Tyler: I knew it was going to be you. Hold on.
Tyler(in the background): Hey Matt, it's Jennifer. She always calls for you. She only calls me after 11..haha.
Matt: Hey Jennifer, did you hear that?

Yes, I did...Tyler is a funny guy. Tyler came by my office today and said he's recording his demo this weekend so he's pretty excited. I'm sure the whole music thing will work out for him since he's so dang talented. I'm really going to miss some of these guys when I leave...Especially these two:

I love this little girl...

Setting: Church on Easter Sunday
Amie's dad, Fred, was playing Jesus in a play at church on Sunday. She had seen her dad with the wig on, but not the full beard yet. Tamara, Amie's mom, and Amie were sitting in church watching the play. Jesus (played by Fred) came on the stage.
Here is the dialogue that went on between them:

Tamara: Amie, who is that? (pointing at Jesus a.k.a. Fred)
Amie: (in very excited voice) That's Daddy!
(A few moments pass)
Amie: (still excited) That's Jesus!
(A few more moments pass)
Amie: (very excited) My Daddy is Jesus!

Of course there's a lesson to be learned here from this precious 2 1/2 year old. I mean, Jesus is our Daddy, but how often do we get excited about that fact?

(Yes, I know this post is a little late, but I've been distracted lately.)

Here are a few recent pictures of Amie:
Isn't she cute?

She's such a good little actress...she takes after her mother.

Is it just me or does she look like she's up to something here?

Yes Amie, we can see your teeth.

Waco or Bust...and Dallas

Well, I've been a little lazy with my blog this past week. I was told by Katy that I need to blog, so here it is-just for you Kat-y!

Last Thursday, Chelle and I took of for Waco to see Derek Webb and Sandra McCracken in concert. We originally planed on spending a little time in Corsicana with my friend Heather, but she had called that morning and had sick kids, so we decided against stopping there. We did stop for lunch in Corsicana though, but not before going to Collins Street Bakery. (I hope Lindsey and Jenni liked the cookies we brought them.) We got little miniature chocolate pies. Next we had to find something for lunch so we ended up going to Don Jose's. Our waiter was Gere (sp?) and must of liked us, because he gave us free sopapillas...of course they only cost 50 cents anyway. We got to Waco around 3:00. Lindsey had to go to work at 4:00, so we were trying to figure out what to do with our free time in Waco. Lindsey said we could go to the send off for the Baylor girls basketball team at 5:00. She tried to make it sound really appealing by telling us about the free food. Now I know I'm not in college anymore, but I do still appreciate free food, however, since we had just eaten, we weren't looking for any food at the moment. We decided we'd just drive around Waco and look for something to do. Yeah, that was a bad idea. We had finally decided we would go to the Dr. Pepper Museum, but when we got there, it was closed. We talked about what else to do, and we both realized we wanted to get our hair cut. We had passed a place when we were driving around, so we decided to go see if they took walk-ins. They only had time for one of us, but the guy in there said his sister had a salon down the road, so one of us could go down there. Philip is the guy that cut my hair and he did a great job. I will admit I was a little scared with all the hair that was falling off, it's just hair, and it grows back. He cut about 3-4 inches off my hair, but with how long it was, it didn't really matter. Michelle got back from the place down the road and waited for me to finish. After we had been freshly groomed, we headed to McAlister's to meet Lindsey for dinner. She was still working when we got there, so she took our order. I asked for everything in a bread bowl (Michelle's idea), but Lindsey refused to put my turkey sandwich in a bread bowl. Oh well...Lindsey got off soon after we got our food and sat to eat with us. After that we went back to the apartment for Lindsey to change, then we went to the concert on campus. Jenni, her roommate, came with us too. When we got there the opening guy (or so we thought) was singing, and I needed to go to the bathroom, so we all walked over to the SUB. I loved how the handicap stall had the sink in there with you. How convenient is that? After that we walked back to where the concert was, listened to the last of Steven's set, then waited patiently for Derek. Sandra sang some songs with him too, so that was great. I love Derek-his voice, his words...he's just a really talented musician and he sings about what is on his heart-just brutally honest most of the time. Well, after his set was over, the concert was over. We thought, "Hey, what about Sandra?" So yeah, we missed Sandra's set. Apparently she sang before the Steven guy. Lindsey was pretty disappointed. Jenni and Zane (her boyfriend) had left the concert a little early, so it was just the 3 of us again. We decided to walk to Common Grounds. There was a little concert going on in there and it was very crowded, so we just got our drinks then sat outside. After finishing our drinks, we headed back to the apartment. It was late and Lindsey had an early meeting, so we all got ready for bed. Chelle was the first one asleep, so I tried to let her sleep by going in Lindsey and Jenni's room. We chatted in there for awhile-Jenni was doing her spanish homework. At some point I went to bed, but I don't really remember when I fell asleep. The next morning we got up around 8:30, since we needed to be on the road around 9:30. (Michelle had to be at work at 1:00 that day.) We got up, loaded our bags back in the car, then said goodbye. We stopped at Starbucks for breakfast on the way out of town. We got back in Tyler around noon. Michelle dropped me off at home and then she headed to get lunch and go to work.

The plan for that day was to leave at 3:00 for Cory's baseball game in Dallas. Since I hadn't been at work, I didn't have my new cell phone. (We got new cell phones at work this past week.) I decided to go up to Joel's office to pick up my phone. He gave me the directions on activating my phone. After that I had to go pick up Ine from school since she needed to get out early to leave for Dallas. We got back to the house around 2:40, so I figured it would only take a few minutes to get my phone activated. I called the 800 number, pushed all the correct numbers, and then waited for the operator. Lucky me-I got the one employee who had no idea how to do anything. After a long 30 minutes, my phone was finally activated. We did leave a little late for Dallas, but it was no big deal. We got to Prestonwood Baptist Church for Cory's game. They were playing Prestonwood's baseball team. The game was great. Lindsey met us up there too so we had fun goofing around. The final score was Grace-3, Prestonwood-2...Oh yes, Grace won their first district game. Cory also had 2 RBI's. I just love my little brother. After the game, the whole team and their families went to eat at The Purple Cow. I had a really great Turkey burger and chocolate shake. My dad drove the first half of the trip home, then asked me to drive the last hour. We got home a little after midnight and crashed. It was a good two days off work, even with all the driving.

p.s. I do have pictures from the Waco trip, but I'm being lazy right now. I'll put them up later.
