Well, I've officially gotten back into lap swimming. I don't know why I ever quit. Well, I do know why. It's because the pool was always too crowded with old guys in speedos, but I've forced myself to look past that and just go for it. Initially I didn't really know how far I'd be able to swim. I wanted to set a goal that I could reach so I wouldn't be discouraged. My first day back was May 16th and I swam 25 laps that morning at 6:00 a.m. For those of you that aren't familiar with swimming, a lap is down and back, not just the length of the pool. I'm only saying this because I've found a lot of people are confused by this concept. The pool here is 50 meters per lap, so 32 laps is basically a mile. That night I went back to lap swim with Michelle and swam some more after diving off the board-which was great fun! I decided after Monday that I would try and swim 32 laps every morning. I figured that was a good reachable goal, so the rest of the week, I did it. 32 laps-one mile swimming. I really enjoyed it and I'm glad I was able to make myself get up early in the morning again. This week I went back to the pool Monday morning. I did my 32 laps and got out. Monday night Michelle and I lifted weights and cardio, so I decided to not swim Tuesday morning. When I went back Wednesday morning to the pool, I realized that I could swim more than 32, so I pushed myself and did 40. Aubrey was swimming that morning too (he has been most mornings) and he stopped me at one point and we had this conversation:
Aubrey: Ok, I did 10 laps, I'm done.
Jenn: Do 5 more.
Aubrey: Jennifer-that's a lot!
Jenn: Ok, then do 3 more. You can do it, I know you can.
Aubrey: Ok, I'll do it. How many have you done?
Jenn: 28
*Aubrey began swimming with no comment*
Really he's been doing great. I've been swimming a lot longer than him, so it makes sense that I can swim more laps than him. He's clearly in better shape than me, but it just takes work to get used to swimming if you haven't done it much. This morning we swam again, but he got in the pool about 35 minutes after me. When he got in he asked, "how many have you done so far?" I told him I had done 30, and he said, "already?" I think I might be discouraging him, but I think he'll keep trying. I did 42 this morning, so that may be my new goal. I don't really have time to do more than that since the pool opens at 6 and I have to be at work at 8.
